I saw this fish today for only $18.00 that looked like an onyx clown, it had black all between the first two stripes and a little bit of black between the second and third stripe, is that an onyx?

The "Onyx" clowns are really just color variations of Percula clowns. They are defined by having all black between the stripes....like the one you saw. At $18, sounds like someone does not know what they have. I'd say grab it....or tell me where it is and I'll take it!!!

IMO a clown shouldn't be called an onyx unless it comes from an onyx lineage (genotype) and also shows the traits (phenotype). To me, the phenotype would have no orange between the first and second stripe, as well as the second and third. A black dorsal fin would be an extra bonus, but that's just a recessive trait. Juvenile onyx might develope these traits as they mature.

I really do not think they know what they have, I may just set up my 10 gallon tank and keep him in there. Maybe they dont know what onyx are? I know that they are a variation of true perculas.

You know what I am thinking, it is probably a recessive trait, because I was looking at the True perculas that I have and they have black between the first two stripes, and the bigger one has a bunch of black between the first two stripes.

Are you judging by color or the price? Pairs of onyx usually go for $150-200. I find it hard to believe they'd spend so much on a black onyx pair from the wholesaler just to mark it down for the same price they bought it for. Can you get a pic?
