I am getting this orangy brownish color on my sand floor and on the live and dead rocks I have in the tank. I have been cycling the tank for about a month now and I am getting spots on some of the rock in the tank and some of the rocks are dead. On dead rock has pinkish purple spots on it, what is that?
I have heard that it takes up to a year for algae to develop fully on a dead rock, is this algae on my "dead" and live rocks. These brown spots are on my sand bed to and I did put a bag of live sand in the tank when I statred the cycling. I hope this is a start in a right direction, please tell me.
Also I do leave me lights on alot in my tank, they are just the standard lights that cam with my 55.
Thanks

It sounds normal to me, but I am new to this all. I can tell you that from my reading here and elsewere that this is common. I had the same bloom everywhere when I upgraded my lights. As for the purple, it sounds like coraline and I have that on my base rock as well. Welcome to the board! :D

sounds like part of your algae cycle,
are the spots on the rock hard, or stringy and flixible, if it is like a hard coating, it is coraline starting, this would be avery good thing, in either case, let it go thru it's cycle, reducing your lighting may help some, whne we started our tank, we only lit for a couple of hours a day to start, then gradually increased it, this helped to gorw the coraline
