A Brita filter ok for the fish tank? It would seem to take out all of the harmful elements...... Am I correct?

I don't think it takes out all the bad stuff ..... minimum I'd use is distilled... the best is RO. :D

What he said.....
A brita Filter is just a basic Carbon filter(The carbon in said filters can't compare to Black Diamond IME). It will filter Sediment, most HEavy metals and many other impurities but it's not good enough for a salt water thank.
Carbon wont take care of Phostphates which can cause a Serious ALgea bloom in a new cycling tank.
If your serious about Saltwater you need to get serious about a RO system.
Peace
