is UV good or bad for marine fish, corals, inverts?

probably a stupid question but would like to know. i have a standard flor. fixture and found some UV 340 bulbs at work. would like to know if it would be good bad or useless.

I'm not a believer in a display tank UV sterilizer... kills everything (good/bad) ineffeciently and shouldn't need it in a healthy system. I can see it treating something like ich in a QT though. Just my opinion though.

its not a uv sterilizer its a 4 ft long flourecent bulb. gives off a dim slightly blue light. its a uva 340 lamp

I'm pretty sure you don't want UV in your tank --- a halide without a glass cover with emit UV in your tank and kill corals so.......
