Anyone here using one of these boxes? How is the water siphoned from the tank? Is there an included pump? Marine depot sells them for $66 and $8 for shipping. Any thoughts? Thank you.
I use one on my 75gal. It is set up as a continuous siphon. You don't absolutely have to have a pump (it is a siphon) but it is recommended that you connect a powerhead venturi line to the top of the overflow to remove any entrapped air. I don't like all the bubbles it puts into my tank so I open the air valve to the venturi once a day to untrap any air that is built up. Having it connected to a powerhead will also allow the overflow to start back up if you have a power outage. And no, it does not come with any pumps. I have had mine for about 5 weeks now and it has been working great. Not too noisy but you can hear it. Make sure you size your overflow for a greater flow rate than the return water pump you are planning on getting (otherwise you will pump out all the water in your sump.
Thanks Jastim,
A couple questions to pick your brain a bit more. First, I have a Aqua Clear 402 powerhead that delivers 270gph. Will that math the overflow. Also, is it a choice of a powerhead or siphon to draw the water. Thanks again.
That powerhead should work fine I think. I use a Penguin that has 300gph and it works well. The "power" used by the overflow to transfer water is gravity siphon. The powerhead is used for two things:
1) to start the siphon when you first install it (or when your power is off for an extended amount of time
2) to remove air that accumulates from entrapment over longer periods of time.
You don't absolutely have to have a powerhead to run this. It will work without one. However, air will accumulate over time so you will need to release that occasionally and the best way is with a powerhead. Also it will restart the sihpon when your power goes off as I have mentioned.
