I have a 125 reef set up w/ lmb, 6 line wrasse, turbo snails, hermits, emerald, cleaner shrimps and fire shrimp. I Really want to get a Jawfish. The guy at the lfs said that it wouldn't be a good idea to get a jawfish if I have hermits b/c hermits are nocturnal and if they grab the jawfish while he is "sleeping" it would b all over for the jawfish. Is this true
??? I don't really wanna take the chance but I really want a jawfish!! Please help :help:

Im not sure but ive never heard of a hermit eating a live fish, maybe if the hermit was bigger than the fish but even then i doubt it. I dont think a regular hermit crab would eat a live healthy jawfish.

I have a blue spot jawfish in my 95gal. I also have 100crabs. A few pretty big, I would actually worry about the jawfish eating the crabs more than the other way. Mine eight a few crabs...almost "suctioned"them out of their shell. I wouldn't worry about it unless the crab is like the size of a golf ball

size of a golf ball :scared: , no deff not. Brought him home tonight, he found a nice rock to hide under. Actually, he's pretty funny. You'll be looking at him and he'll turn his head to look at you. He's very cute. :joy:

Try putting some food in a turkey baster and putting the food near or in his hole. Thats what I have to do with my Tiger Jawfish. They are to slow when it comes to eating, and the other fish will eat the food before the jawfish has time. I feed mine mysis shrimp ans marine cusine.

We always use kent marine garlic extreme, kinda hoped that woulda worked. How long did you have to do it for or are you still doing it? Thanks for the help n ur tiger jawfish is pretty cute himself

When I first got him he would stay in his hole and wait for food. Ever since I changed over to LS he would not eat unless it was delivered to him. Not beacuse of LS, Im thinking maybe from the shock of the transfermation, Tank to bucket, then bucket to tank, and his hole being destryoyed and all. So hopefully he will get back into his old habits. He also swims around the tank which he never did, he was always in his hole.

The first night we had him, i went downstairs and saw him swimming around (when moonlights were on). i got a lil freaked out b/c i thought he was scared and was gonna jump out (top of tank is totally open...i know shame on me). but since then have not really seen him outta the hole he's in. but im not here during the day to monitor him so i dont know what he does during the day. hmmmm sounds like we got some spoiled jaws lol they need delivery. ive only had him since tuesday so maybe hes still stressed a bit...idk. will have to try the delivery style during feeding time. have u tried garlic extreme??

I’ve had a Dusky Jawfish for sometime now and he’s doing very well (actually considering buying another). I also have hermits and they pose no threat to him at all, if anything he will pick them up and move them around.
Jawfish do not tend to do well in tanks with very active fish (can not compete for food and will become stressed). If you are having issues with him eating I recommend getting a long pipette or a piece of air hose and depositing food into his burrow with it. I have had great success with formula II, I also have a very large population of Mysis in my fuge and I suspect he’ll munch on them. It took about a month for him to come out of his burrow to feed but he’s zips back into as soon as he gets a bite of food…fun to watch. If your jawfish spends excessive time out of his burrow I’d be concerned and I'd try to keep movement infront of the tank miniimal to avoid stressing the fish. In time it should make a burrow.

The first night i had him he was out of his burrow at around 11pm when the moonlights were on. I was concerned. That same night, he dugg up pretty much the whole tank (will post pix). Now he has a nice little hole for himself. My boyfriend said he ate one piece of mysis shrimp today and as soon as he got it, jumped back into his hole. You feed him formula 2??? we feed that stuff at work, and i personally hate it (too messy for my taste). but if he will eat it, i will try that. also have been told, stickin ne thing in his burrow may stress him out more then what he might already be. i have a 6 line wrasse, lmb, and sebae clown. none of which seems to be bothering him. im planning on gettin a small school of green chromis's, naso tang, some yellow tangs. barred bullet goby to clean my sand. i really dont wanna stress him out. i do love him tho hes so cute :joy:

We have a yellowhead in a 129. He has made his trails in the sand and is out most of the day close to one of his many burrows and is not bothered by any of the other fish. His favorite food is blood worm.
I hope you continue to enjoy your jawfish as much as we do ours! :jumping:
