This is my favorite fish in our reef. I love the way jaw fish engineer there home. I give him small pieces of rock and he drags it in to build it. He was a great addition to our reef tank.

I bought 2 they both jumped.. I keep my water level the same.. and they went carpet surfing

I'm getting glass lids to help w/ evaporation.. so maybe I'll try another one!

I saw one jump probably around 3 inches but luckily landed back in the water. It is usually soon after introcing them that they will attempt it. Have a spare glass cover laying around and if you purchase one put it on for a week or 2. The bluespotted jawfish are really tempting me but $100 is not in the budget right now. Kindbuds, very nice photo. I like how hes got a little welcome mat near his door.

These guys are so animated, there was a hermit getting kinda close so BSJF scooted over, picked up the hermit in his mouth and spit him out about 6" away. The hermit walks back over, so he picks him up again and then spits him out about 12" away. Yep, crab walks back over and so he picks him back up and darts over to the farthest corner of the tank and spits him into the wall...LOL....funniest thing I have ever seen.

My jawfish hasn't eaten since i got him, two days ago, i've fed frozen brine shrimp to the tank a few times and there are plenty of pieces that have gone right by his home, 2" from his face, and he didn't go for it. Tried flake too, but I didn't know where he was on that account so I didn't see him at all.

Yeah jawfish are definitely jumpers, so be careful. We had a few jump out at the LFS I work at. It usually only happens within the first few nights. Once the lights go out they get spooked and jump out. Moon lights seem to help them from jumping as well. Once they get a burrow started and they get shelter they are a lot less likely to jump out.

Jawfish do need a DSB, but 2" would be ok. I have a Yellow Head Jawfish and he made his home under the rock. I just give him small pieces of rock to build his home.

Have you tried feeding him mysis shrimp? My usual mixture includes: mysis shrimp, krill, formula 2 flake, prime reef flake, cyclops, & rotifers (phytoplankton for the filter feeders, soft corals, & hard corals), and garlic. I mix it all up and then I spot feed the tank with a turkey baster. Making sure not to over feed.

To jump start feeding this guy I used a 1/4inch clear plastic tube thats about 36" long, filled the turkey baster with mysis, injected it into the tube and them stuck the tube down to where he was sitting, now after two days of doing this, he simply sits there, opens his wide mouth and lets the food fall in...LOL

I had one, he was awsome...I had a shallow sand bed but I put in a bunch of broken bits of shelll and he pilled them all up to make a fortess! It was so funny when he used the hermits shells there where still occupied, he would get so mad when they crawled away!! But sadly hte bottom of my 10gal tank broke out about 9 months ago and he was sucked out with the sand and i didnt find him in tim

I am thinking of getting a new one, and a new 12gal tank, give my fish a couple extra gallons... would a jawfish and a bi-color blennie fight? I am willing to trade the blennie if they would, I love jawfish! :happyfish
