mine does that as well, but only for a few days. you would be supprised at how much they swim around at night. i would not be worried, just make sure your tank is covered they are famouse for their ability to jump

Now he is near top and looks to be going to top of water for air? rest of fish are fine but jawfish back fin is also all gone somehow, I doubt anyone in tank did it....

what do you have in the tank, also, if fins start to dssappear you may have to worry about fin rot. since Jawfish live in the sand they arre the first to show sign of disease like that. (well after tangs anyway)

Ok, whats fin rot and what might cause it or how would I deal with it? In the tank also----
2 clownfish
canary blenny
purple firefish
2 small cleaner goby
couple feeder shrimp
cleaner shrimp
about 12 hermit crabs(different kinds)
algae blenny
2 coral catfish
Thats it. I had two antanae gobys in briefly a week ago, but they looked a little sick at fish store and died a few days after bringing them home, although they started to look better. Oh well

Forgot that I had emerald crab too but doesnt matter, nobody in tank was eating its back fin, especially since it was in his hole. He has been at very top of surface for 2 days now. I can put my hand on him and he doesnt swim away

maybe he likes to be petted.
fin rot is a diesase where (i think it is a bacteria) eats away at the fins of the fish. the fins are kinda outlines in white where they are dissappearing.
does you jawfish show any signs of distress . other than swimming to the top of the tank and now liking being petted?
i have ablue headed wasses who likes to be petted. he is great i chase him around the top of the tank and then he chases my hand. iti s quite funny watching a 3 inch fish "chase" a hand around.

Hmm... Well, if he had been picking on the emerald crab it may have ripped off a fin. I had a scooter blenny that was bugging a Sallylighfoot crab. The crab tore off its top fin and it acted distraught and would not eat for several days, (Distraught as in hanging out by the surface of the water) and shortly after, he died. Jawfish in the wild eat small crabs and shrimp, so it may be that he was picking on your emerald crab.

well now he is in a new hole, still no back fin, on the other side of the tank and not eating, but at least hes in a hole again, not hovering, just sitting in the hole.
