Jawfish

I just got a very small pearly headed jaw fish for my tank. I'm really glad I got him, he's a lot of fun to watch, but how much excavating do they usually do? I thought they made a home just a little bit bigger than themselves in the sand, but's he's already dug out two big (at least 4" by 4") enough holes to make my rock structure very unstable. Will he finally make a home that he is happy enough in, or is he continually going to try to bring ruin to my aquascaping?

My sandbed is just a little over four inches deep, so I think he's ok there. A mate does sound like a interesting idea, but is there a way to tell the diffence between a male and female? Or are they like some other fish that will eventually become the opposite of the other fish in the tank? Thanks for your help.
