66 years ago history was made.
My great uncle hit Omaha beach and survived.
Also the war in the Pacific was turnig tides between June 4 and June 7 during the Battle of Midway.
The Yorktown still sits silently at the bottom.....

I met a man here at Ft Huachuca who was in the first wave at Omaha. All the men in is LCT were killed, except him. He said all those boys, the oldest being a 22 year old Lt, knew they had no chance. As they approached the beach, the machine gun fire on the gate was deafening and they all knew they were going to die. When the gate dropped, not one man hesitated, even as the heavy machine gun "walked up the boat"-his words. My brother, who is a retired Navy/Air Force veteran, said it wasn't bravery, it was good training. I disagree. They knew the mission was more important than themselves and offered their lives that others may live. That, to me, is bravery that no amount of training can instill. As Admiral Nimitz said of another invasion, "Uncommon valor was a common virtue". That best sums up that generation.
