Just a quick poll

I am moving to GA in about 4-5 months and I have a 10g that I have already cycled and was going to use for dsh. Now that I know I am going to be leaving in 5 months I am reluctant to do so. I will be driving to GA to bring the rest of my stuff down so I will be able to move the tank and the stuff but I am wondering if it would be possible to do it without starting another cycle and killing everything. As of now I have about 15 lbs of sand and 10 lbs of rock just sitting in the tank with the filter and light and its driving me crazy. What do you think I should do? I only want input from people who actually have had to move a tank a long distance or directly know or helped somebody do it. (no offense to everybody else) By the way im going to be driving from NY. (took 12 and a half hours nonstop last time I did it) This time will probably take longer because I will be dragging a big trailer.

if you drain the tank to an amount of water just to cover the sand put the LR in buckets of water and livestock in others. you should be fine.
refill the tank half or all the way on arrival and promptly drain it out while all the matter is still suspended and the water is murky you will eliminate a bunch of the gunk that would initiate a new imbalanced cycle.
add more water and your LR let the tank settle, IMO this should reduce the potential for a new cycle. I have moved my tank 3 times, upgraded and so on, only once did I have to deal with ammonia spike. I had premixed water ready for changes. I think this method provides a good chance of not throwing your tank into a full 6 week cycle balance. there may be a minor rebalancing but it would be marginal.

Thats pretty much what I was thinking it just seems a little risky with the horses because they are very fragile. I'm wondering if I could leave them in my brothers fuge (he lives in georgia) until I get the tank set up and test the levels. Maybe get one of those guppy breeders and keep them in there on the side of his fuge for a week or so. Anybody think that would work. Wheres bronco lol.

hey there...i would think just hold off 5 months if you can, make it easier for ya since youll not just have to make sure the dwarves are fine, but also that you have plenty of enriched brine to make sure they get fed their twice daily meal--like mentioned i would just take all the water, cover the tank and sand in with garabage bag of something, then either do as said previously or do a slow drain into the tank- like using airline to let it go in, if that drained on a bowl or something should be fine with any sand etc.
Oh, and i've moved, only 3.5 hours, but it was a 75 and did the drain and garabage bag deal
