Just add water?

Just finished my sump and plumbing set up and not sure how to test it. Do I use RO/DI water or should I use saltwater to test the setup?

is this a new tank? or something you're hooking to an existing tank?
new tank - test with ro
existing tank - use saltwater

What's the plan? You just want to fill it up and see if everything is watertight and then you are going to drain it and do some more stuff?

New tank setup. After the test I will be getting my live rock and saltwater and starting from there.

Fill it with reg water and let it run for 24 hours to make sure no leaks. If you didn't rinse out all the new equipment before installation, I would drain it and replace with salt water when ready. If you did rinse everything out then i'd use the ro water to mix salt water. This assuming there is no live rock/sand in the tank yet.

i dont test first.i just plug it in and look straight up with my hands together and eyes closed.
really though i have never test run a system.i just make sure the tanks dont leak out side for a few days with garden hose water then wash .
i figure as long as the tanks dont leak if there is a problem i can just shut it down.then fix it but as long as you did it right there shouldnt be a problem.the only major thing is i like to put a valve from the return pump to the tank and shut it half way when starting a new set up.then open it when it looks good.
