Well, you guys said it needed to be done, so here it is. I left some on the far right side for feeding purposes as well as in the lower back side behind the liverock.

now that I can see the back ground I would have left the algae...

just kidding
looks good, you could probably use some more live rock, and a step up water changes or cut back feeding a bit to slow down the algae growth.

haha, funny. I don't feed often at all. I just think I let it get out of hand a little. By the way, will a lawnmower blenny be okay for my coral and liverock, or will it be intrusive? I may trade scooter in for one.

a lawn mower blenny is fine with coral and rock it will help keep them cleaner so your coraline can grow, just keep in mind LMB's eat and poop alot.

I am letting it get "corallined". If you can see it, the little rock next to the barnacles used to be white. Now it is plastered with coralline. Keep in mind, I am also getting 20 more #'s of LR and that rainbow rock will be used as a base rock. I know it looks bad, haha, I am usually VERY picky about what goes in the tank.

its not the looks that bother me its the chemical composition of the rock. its leaching stuff that accelerates algae growth into your tank, like Iron, possibly phosphates, its hard to say with a dgree of real accuracy but it is not considered marine safe.

what are you using for substrate? i bet thats holding a lot of junk and causing algae problems.

I started out with 25% live sand and 75% fine crushed coral/shell mixture.

i can guarantee that 75% of crushed shell/ CC mixture is a major part of your problem. replace that with some nice new live sand and you'll be good to go.

Well, since I am obviously not going to re-do my substrate, will a protein skimmer keep the levels of unwanted stuff down? I am either buying 20# of new live rock or a skimmer. If the skimmer is not a NEED right now, I will get the rock. You tell me.

could I just cover over the old substrate?

why is it obvious that you wouldn't replace the substrate?
imo, repalce it, get a skimmer, then add some more cured LR.

I am confused. If I cover all the nooks that are being covered in harmful things with live sand, will it not get rid of the problem?

all the detritus, fish poop, fish food, anything thats in your water column that settles get stuck in that substrate. you dont want to just cover it up because its not gunna just disapear. it will slowly break down and leech p04s into your water. this is gunna continuosly feed your algae and it will continue to grow.
a 3-4" sand bed will be effective in breaking down any of that junk and will hopefully slow down the algae.
i also suggest investing in a skimmer and a powerhead. i honestly dont think those HOB filters are providing enough circulation in that tank, and that isnt helping the situation either.
