I have a 55g tank, flouresent lighting and over the back filters.
with a power head to circulate the water.
Can I get started with this or should I purchase different filter system first or can I up grade later.
Also where can I purchase and what kind of sand that does not have silicates?
Anything else I should start with????? budget tight so go easy on me.

For the sand I would go to you local fish store and get some sand from them, do not get crushed coral. Do a search and you will see why. Get the sand that they recommend. Or maybe some members of this board can help a bit more on the sand. As for what you have. You can get started with what you have but you can only get fish and some live rock. I wouldnt get any corals with the set up that you have. This is what I think

I bought my sand on line. there are several that sell dead dry sand. google seaflor special grade reef sand or aragamax sand. I did one bag of each of these. then seed it with live sand. they sell it on this sight. you only need 5 lbs or so to seed. There are several companys that have catologes which is nice. you can shop and compare prices and shipping.
When i started my 55, i also added a canister filter and a hob fuge. you might want to add a sump later, but you really dont have to have one. you wil also need a couple more powerheads.
good luck

gb..You have the proper equipment to start a 'fish only' aquarium. I would suggest that you spend the money on some 'dead aragamix' sand as another poster noted. While I have read some posts that indicate they use other sand I think you would be safer, and in the end, spend less money if you do it right. Read in the archives about cycling the tank properly and go slow with the addition of fish. When I first started I added fish too quickly. That resulted in much more work (doing water changes) and expense (salt and fish loss) than if I had taken my time.

The answer to play sand from Walmart is no. There is something in the sand that isnt good for saltwater critters. wether it be fish or inverts or corals. Dont do that. I am sure some one else will chime into this to help out but I wouldnt use regular play sand, for freshwater you could but salt you cant or shouldnt

If you can find Southdown, Old Castle or Yardright aragonite play sand then yes. It is a finer sand than what is normally sold, but it works beautifully in reef tanks. (I have 700Lbs of it in my 180 gallon). Unfortunately it is rarely sold anymore.

Depends on the depth of the sand you want. Unless you have researched deep sand beds carefully go with under 1 inch of sand. Click on the button to the left under the Live rock/sand section for a depth calculator.

In order to cycle the tank you need a few things. First you need something that is "dying off" and you also need something that consists of denitrifying bacteria. For the die off, I would go with a piece of raw shrimp from your local grocery store. This will start to deteriorate if you just drop it in. As for the bacteria, you would be better off getting live sand and CURED live rock (uncured will have more die off, bigger swing in numbers during cycle). Live sand and Live rock will really help your cycle out, because they are already full of the bacteria that gets rid of the ammonia and other toxic chemicals. For your tank you are going to need roughly 60 lbs of sand and 60 lbs of rock (or more, I have 80 in my 55) in order to get things going in the right direction. For the sand, you could probably buy 10 lbs of live, and the rest regular sand as it will all be seeded and become "live sand" in a short period of time. For the rock, if you could get it all at once that would be great, if not then buy as much as you can afford, as every little piece helps. Hopefully you can get at least 20 lbs (there is a store near me that sells it for 4$ a lb). Definitely take your time and read all the threads you can about cycling a tank and running a fish only (FOWLR) tank.
NOTE: Dont get Crushed Coral as your substrate, whatever you do, dont make that mistake, it will cause nothing but problems later on down the road.

*Over the back filters will be fine for now.
*For a fish only tank strive for 10-15x turnover (add up gph of all your filters and powerheads and see if they are 10 to 15xs more than your gallons per hour).
*Skimmers are great.
Edit:
Gb, if you click on your name there is an option to view your previous posts. Yuo can go back and read the advice you've been given on earlier threads since you seem to have asked many of these same questions in the past several months.
