Just got a Sand sifting Star question on Acclimating

It says on here 3 hours, does that mean I have to drip this for that long? Thats a long time, should I lower the drip rate? Its dripping fast

Yes lower the drip rate. It should be a slow drip.About a drip every second or so. Make sure the temp. is stable. Sand sifters are pretty hardy. Mine survived an ammonia spike awhile back.Ammonia was around 0.25ppm. It was a nightmare as I lost some fish but the star was ok. I was shocked.
Personally when I got my sand sifting star I left it in the bag floating on the tank water and about every 15 mins I would add a tsp. of tank water to the bad for about 2 1/2 hours...lol crazy I know but I didn't want to risk the temp. shock having it acclimate in the bucket even with a heater I am in Maine and it's freezing..lol
I have had him 6 1/2 months now. There really cool critters!

Again they are pretty hardy stars. I would worry more about trying to keep it from starving. What size tank is it going in?

Well thanks for the reply. I posted this a few hours ago and I dripped him for only about a 1 1/2 hours. I then placed him in the tank. He immediately buried himself. I hope he will be Okay. He is in a 46 gallon. Do they come out at all or stay under sand the whole time?

Sorry no one posted sooner. Yeah I saw you posted this about 4 hours ago and thought"the stars probably in the tank already..lol) The star should be fine. As I said they are very hardy stars. In regard to him burying himself, he is fine. Mine did the same thing after I put him in the tank. They are very active stars and during the day he will come up and move around a bit and then bury him self again. Most of the time though they are partially or fully burried.
Mine sometimes climbs on the glass.
Again my only concern would be him cleaning your sand of microfauna in the 46 gallon and starving in the coming months. I have found out they rarely take to spot feeding and I have been hoping mine will continue to be ok in my 55 gallon.Going on 7 months now..haha May have to give him to a friend with a bigger tank in the future.

Well if all goes as I hope I should have a 120 soon. If not I heard they will eat chopped up clams. I can spot feed him I suppose.

With spot feeding it is a hit or miss with sand sifting stars. Mine was a miss. Hopefully your is a hit.

I've had my sandsifter for almost a year now and he cruises around the bottom of the tank like a champ. Burying himself is normal. Mine also climbs the tank glass every once in a while. I got lucky and my guy eats the little bits of food that drops to the bottom of the tank. Just a wonderful addition to my 55 gal reef.
