Just got my Cube Masters (QT)

OK, so after doing some research on this site, I'm learning Cube Masters are a piece of junk, which might explain why I got it so cheap.
But, I just need it for a QT (my main tank is going to be 125 gallons). So since it's going to be a QT do I go ahead and use the bio balls, carbon, and there is some small ceramic rings (I think that's what they are). Right now I have (going from right to left) a white sponge in 1st compartment, black sponge in 2nd compartment and then the 3rd compartment they had the bio balls, carbon, and ceramic rings. Do I stick all three items in the 3rd compartment and leave the fourth compartment empty? Since it is going to be a QT should I leave out the carbon all-together?
Or, should I just send the whole thing back and say I changed my mind. Turning around and buy a more reputable nano tank. I was just trying to go the cheapest route for a QT, which is why I jumped at this one being only $89. Please Help!

Oh, and the other thing I learned is even though they say it's a 12 gallon tank, that has to include the entire filter system, because that is NOT 12 gallons of swim room. I have an Eclipse 12 gallon for my freshwater fish and it's bigger than this tank.

Any QT is better than none, IMO.
I'd ditch the sponge/balls/rings and go for the minimalist theory.
