just got my tank, need help

I just got my 12 gal Aquapod!!!! I have a couple questions I couldn't find anywhere. I JUST set up my tank. Got the salt water mixed in and everything running. I know I can cycle my tank with LR and LS. I don't have the rock yet (wanted to get the tank set up first) I can run out and get the LS at my LFS, but didn't know if the water had to be a certain temp to add the LS?
Also, I got the protien skimmer, I read somewhere that somebody took something out one of the three compartments in the back and put the skimmer in there. I think they took out the sponge. Any one here know?

There really is no certain temp beyond the usual 74-80 degrees that most keep their tank. Some people keep theirs higher some lower, but IMO coraline grows faster at a slightly cooler temp(IE under 80) I keep mine at 76.

yes take out the sponge... but i still cant fit my fission skimmer in to the aquapod 12g. i tried every way
