i set up a qt tank tonight (a hand-me-down cycled 15 gal.) with a penguin mini. is this enough filtration or do i need more? i think a penguin mini is like 130-140 gph.

What filteration doe that offer? Carbon, filter pads?
Water movement in tank is very important. You could add Fluval's new underwater filters which are pretty handy, especially for doing carbon filtration to clean up meds.
Glad to hear you set up a QT!

could you tell me more about the underwater filters you mentioned...the one i have has the bio wheel and cartridge, i just don't think it will be enough...i think i can sacrifice a powerhead from my main tank, but as far as filtration goes,i want to get something more.

Beth,
Do you keep that tank maintained with just the filters and heater?
It seems to me like setting up a small 10-15 gallon permenent qt would be difficult. Or I should say setting up would not be difficult, but maintaining good water quality in a tank that size would be?
Also, what do you do with the tank when you do not have a qt animal in it? Do you try to keep something else in there on a regular basis and take it out when you need it as a qt?

Its a 20 gal tank. Ideally you only QT 1 fish at a time, unless you have a school or mated pair. I plan to have smaller fish in my tank, so the smaller QT size is fine for me. If you are going to add larger fish, then go with a 30 gal.
When fish are in the tank, I just do a gal of water change a day, with water from my main tank. If I do hypo, there is so many water changes involved with that, that I don't have to do additional changes except during the 3 wks of hypo itself.
There is a lot of circulation in that little tank [3 outlets]. Haven't had a problem.

When you do not have a fish in the qt, do you continue to perform daily water changes and feed the tank so the tank will not crash?
Or do you basically keep up on it minimally and then give it an overhaul when you need it again?

The first part of this statement, yes; by "overall" I'd say more, "reconditioning". I'll do a big water change using my display tank water, I'll add a cup of LS, and also change out old filter media with media that I've seeded in my main tank for a week.
