Just Wondering...

Do any of you use background paper to make the tank look cooler? My tank looks pretty uneventful, mostly because its new, but I was wondering what else I could do to make it look cooler.

The only background paper I have used on marine tanks was a paper graduated from light blue at the top to dark navy at the bottom. Those seascape backgrounds always seem too busy to me, and ultimately detract from the real centerpiece of the tank - the organisms. The back of my current 220 gallon tank is painted black and is fine. One reason I went away from the backing paper is that inevitably salt creeps between the backing and the rear of the tank, which ruins the look.

I agree with GeriDoc. I had a seascape background on my 36G and after only a couple of weeks it started to get distorted and eventually I could barely see half of it. On my current build I'm painting the back and sides black.

The tank is cycling. You will prob need a small water change. This is why u have to wait to add fish. Clowns should be ok but dont add more until its done cycling

For a 20 gal. I would do maybe 3 gal. Generally u dont want to do them during the cycle but since u have fish in it you want to knock down your nitrate

Are there any live plants I could put in?

Hi,

A painted background, or even the plastic prefabbed stuff works great for hiding those wires, and makes the tank look much better. A fake rock background really adds some flare too.

There are some really beautiful macroalgae that will add color and look awesome, with the huge plus of helping keep the tank water pristine, removing nitrates, nitrites, ammonia and phosphates because it absorbs it to grow. Check out Golf Coast Ecosystems
.

Just so you know...fish do not care about nitrates, even in the 100's...inverts however can't survive beyond 40, so 20 isn't so bad for your system. Water changes always help, and should be done once a month at least to keep nitrates down.
