over and over i have heard that just about EVERY pitcher has used pine tar for grip in cold weather... it DOES NOT effect the movement of the ball...
there should be pre-inning hand checks, strip searches and body cavity searches i guess...

the thing that peeved my about this was he was very smug about it. The umpires should have gone over and checked his hands/hat etc. after Tony called it. And not leave it to Tony to press the issue. Look back to Traverez (sp) last year. The confiscated his hat and found N O T H I N G !! But still fined and suspended him for 10 days.
There was an indviidual on from Wash U. this am on the news and stated that a foreign substance WILL effect the ball is some manner. Especially pine tar.

if pine tar does effect the movement then why are players allowed to use it on their bats and gloves??? and if they are putting it on those things whos to say it doesnt get on their shoes, hats, uniforms, benches, helmets...

why then is it illegal?

It should not be coming into contact with anything they where during their time on the filed. Batting gloves, helmets etc. All of those are only used when batting. Regular hats are only used in the field.
When the pine tar comes into contact from the bat, there is very little if any left. I see most players wiping it off before batting.
This guy had a bunch on his hand. It was the first thing I noticed on the first ptich. It was a very sticky/tacky substance. If if were dirt, it would have worn off or worn down after all his pitches.
This really isn't a matter to be argued, but it will hang over his head for a long time and that is a sad statement when you still feel compelled to cheat/break the rules even when your team is in the playoffs and now the World Series.
Several retired umpires have been interviewed here and they all say, they would have persued the matter and kicked him out of the game.
All I can say that I am leaving for a great game.....WIN or LOSE.......we are in the World Series for gods sake !!!

Has anyone else heard this?
My friend said that on ESPN radio they said they checked the tapes and that Rogers wears a hat that is different than all the other Tigers. The underside of his bill is black while all the other Tigers have light colored bills. They also said that even after he washed his hand(and in his other 2 postseason starts) he is clearly rubbing the underside of his bill and then the ball before EVERY pitch.
They were basically saying he wears this different colored hat to hide the pine tar he has stashed there. Could this actually be true?? If it is, Rogers has sunk to Bondesque stature and has taken cheating to a new level. I gotta get a tape of the game and see if you can see the color under the bills of the tigers hats.

if you watch most pitchers in the MLB go to the bill of there cap then the back of there cap then to the ball, it is actaully just a habit i did it when i pitched, most of the time it is just to wipe sweat from fingertips but then you just get used to doing it before every pitch and you even do it when you have no sweat on your fingers

I cant believe Larussa didnt have him searched and tossed. He should have been suspended but he'll probably end up as mvp. Baseball at its finest

Now I haven't heard anything about the different color hats, but the fact is Kenny Rogers cheated. When asked about it he said it was a clump of dirt. Then later in the same press conference he said twice that he "took it off". I don't know about you but I "wash" dirt off. You "take" illegal substances off, in this case the pine tar. It doesn't matter if his pitches had any unnatural movement. Even if he used it just for better grip, he still had an advantage over Weaver.

I'd agree that he definitely cheated. No mlb pitcher ever has something on his pitching hand that he doesnt know about, during a world series start no less. Pitchers know every speck on their pitching hands. To claim that spot was dirt he didnt notice is insane, much less to have the EXACT stain 2 games in a row.... Weird

Why do sinker pitchers try and sneak Pine tar .... More friction creating more spin creating more ball movement.. this is why they have banned snot balls or spitters ... also makes they ball heavier creating more speed ..... Ever se schilling rub that sweaty head of his .... ever wonder why he doesnt shower before games .... grease

it helps you grip the ball which makes an 88mph fastball become a 93 mph fastball that is what was happening on the 1st inning, as for pine tar on the bats itis only aloud 12 insches from the handle (i believe) if not its close to that and most player if any that i know of use it in there gloves

"I rub up the balls between the innings and before the game all of the time," he said. "I rub up the bullpen balls I pitch with with mud, resin, spit. I do it all the time. They rub the ball up, too, with mud before the games." - Kenny Rogers
hmmmm is he coming out???

he had too much of his bat covered... like 28" of the bat and your only allowed 12"...
look at the helmets of batters... most of em are covered with pine tar...
