Kent Marine Phosphate Sponge

Has anyone used this product? It is tiny crystals that claim to absorb phosphates. I purchased this because it was on clearance at ***** and they did not have a phosphate pad. Poured the crystals in my Marineland Emperor 400's filter housings and waiting now. I am having a cyano and green algea bloom and trying to remove the phosphates out of the water. Just wondering if anyone had experience with it.

If this is another ferric hydroxide product, it will work. Even if it is a different substance, it should work. Phosphate is very easy to remove and (IMO) Kent makes good stuff. Most phos removers work very quickly.
Edit: I just looked and I think this Kent product is the same stuff as SeaChem PhosGuard, which is excellent. It will remove silicates too. BTW, have you tested for phosphates? This is the only way to be sure that phos is causing the problem and the only way to really tell if the remover works.

Well, I don't have a phosphate tester yet. Looked at the store and could not find one. I got mad cyano popped up and alot of green algea all of a sudden. I started the tank with tap water so most opinions were probably phosphate and silicate problem. I figured untill I find a test kit, wouldn't hurt to put this in the filter. It was on the clearance rack for only $4 for a big jar of it. And it does say it will remove silicates but only after the phosphates are removed. I have switched to RO water now that I found a cheap place to buy it.
And that SeaChem PhosGuard does look similiar to this stuff. The SeaChem PhosGuard looks like pellets and the Kent Marine looks like you crushed something up. Sure it is the same though.

Chemi-Pure (regular) is a great product. The "Elite" is good too; but all it does is add ferric hydroxide to the regular Chemi-Pure. Ferric hydroxide doesn't last nearly as long as the Chemi-Pure. IMO, it would be cheaper and more effective to use the Chemi-Pure (instead of carbon) full time and just use one of the many phosphate removers when needed. If you need to use a phos remover full-time; you have a problem that needs attention. Often over-feeding or source water.

Only been running with fish for a month, before that about 3-4 weeks curing. I just cleaned all the algea out and took out about 10 gals and added fresh RO to it. I have been topping off with RO also. I don't want to add any chemicals. i want to try and do it naturally if I can.

Chemi-Pure isn't my idea of a chemical additive; certainly no more so than the phosphate sponge you're using. It's a carbon based filter media that simply absorbs pollutants and generally adds nothing to the water. Its a very popular substitute for carbon.

Oh okay, I am sorry I did not know that. I am still very new and it sounded like a chemical additive. I may check that out then. Thanks.
