I guarantee you will get many conflicting opinions on this, but IMO as long as the lighting is consistent your fish will get used to it. I would have all your lighting on timers if you dont already. Its all about consistency with saltwater.
All of those conflicting opinions never made sense to me. The moon is on all night, is it not? Besides cloud cover, of course. So I don't understand why some people think it's bad to have a few little lights on all night simulating the moon. I agree that consistency is key. My moon lights are hardly bright enough to see until your eyes adjust to it. Then it really does look like the moon (go figure) shimmering in the dark water.
IMO, it depends on the moon lights. I have seen moon lights that are way too bright and those definitely should be on a timer. I had two tiny LEDs on my 29 and left them on 24/7. Those "rope lights" and spot light moon light "pods" they sell are far too bright.

True, but many days in a month is the moon in full? Or how many days are completely overcast with zero moonlight?

Hmmm, well if you look at it that way, maybe consistency isn't the key after all! I really think (just like you said), as long as they're not super bright, they'll be fine.
Aren't there moon lights out there now that really simulate the moon with different brightness on different nights, etc? I thought I read about those somewhere. Now THAT would be cool.
Yeah, I would also like to get the LED that arent super blue like mine are. I see a lot of people who have LED that give off a whitish color, and I persoanlly think that that would emulate the moon's light much better.
you can buy an entire lunar lighting system- does all phases of the moon.
but its mucho $, and imho, unneccessary.
my moonlights are on only from 10pm to 12 noon. by 7 am, there's enough light in the house that you cant even tell they are on.
after 6 months of leaving them on 24/7 my cheap coralife leds stopped working. i think it might have been spray getting up in them. if you get some make sure you cover them.

Unnecessary, definitely... but still pretty cool!
My solaris Leds have moon lights and they simulate the phases of the moon with a general light level from 1-100 and mho i think they should be at like 10% power. Basically what im saying is that I think you should have really dim lights because moonlight really isnt that strong in nature
