I have heard of it, but have read that the mortality rate is high. Not worth it IMO.

I have never heard of a condy splitting in an aquarium. Usually it is just bubble-tip anemones that split.

I have read where some condi's have split asexually, many times they release gamates into the water column, sometimes with toxic results.

well when my 3 clowns and 2 brittle stars go into a different tank and i find a new home for my toad fish i may try it in what is left of my 37 gallon. ill be shure to take out my other cond. so the one is the only thing in the tank. i need to take everything out of the tank and start over because i mase the mistake of using crushed coral. DOH! oh well when i do it ill post pics.

Another, probably more safe way of encouraging your anemones to split without all the safety measures, is the water change method.
Feed the anemones daily or every other day with meaty foods for about 2 weeks. Then do a massive water change, like 30-50%. I have heard of BTAs splitting after the water change, so I guess it may be similar to the Condys. I don't know whether they split because of stress or because they sense this new clean water, able to support another anemone.
