I bought 80lbs of l/r and I plan on putting it in a holding tank, should there be light or not . the only thing in it is power heads for circulation. my salinity 1.023.
I will be ready in a few days to put it in my new set up.
also should I do water changes .

you dont want any light to get to the rock or you will have a problem with hair algea i would add a protein skimmer and test your water and when the cycle is over you can add the rock make suer you keep up with the water changes while its curing

you mean the rocks will cycle in my holding tank, I was told this will get rid of on wanted critters. Im not sure if I was clear , my main tank is not ready till the end of the week so this was a way of keeping the rocks live . they also tolded me to wash down the rocks in hot water and scrub a little , to get worms and others out.
So actually whats the purpose of all of this, maybe Im a little confused, or a little thick
thanks

There are different opinions on whether you should have light, but I would use light. If there is any life that needs the light, it will die without it. I would worry about the algae later. Algae will be kepy in control by water quality and a clean up crew when you get to that point Don't wash you live rock with hot water. You will turn it into dead rock. You can scrub off any obvious dead items, but leave the rest. You want to keep the worms, etc. It will help your tank. Yes, you can cycle the live rock in a holding tank, while you are waiting to set up your tank.
