Lazy Puffer

Hi, I've had a striped puffer for about three months now. He is eating and everything but only time i get to see him is when he's eating! All the other times he just goes into to the rocks and stay hidden. Is he just shy or lazy? Or is something wrong with him? He was injured before because he was caught in the powerhead right when I got him. He is totally healed from that now.

I don't know much about saltwater puffers, but my brackish water puffer always shys away when I get close, and I have had him for 4 months... From what I understand marine puffers are 'post to be more loving and love attention. how long have you had him? What breed?

I've had him for a few months now. He's a striped puffer. He used to be out going but now he's boring! My porc. puffer is much more fun to look at!

By striped puffer I assume it is the green and black species that is often sold as brackish puffers. There are so many names for these Puffers it is hard to pin some down. Anyway, if you have a lot of rockwork its sitting around is normal. I have mentioned before a statement I read once which sums up Puffers very well. It was "Puffers normally sit around on the bottom waiting for a thought provoking action such as feeding". My Dogs do sit more then my Porks which are pretty active all day. So not to worry you gave it a good home and it is using it the way it would in the wild.

Hew~ I am relieved to hear that... I guess he likes to just sit around in the rock work. By the way, my puffer is tan color with black stripes. He has a very large back fin compared to other puffers.

I have two porks and I've got to say that they are the most "interesting" fish I've ever had. Sometimes they swim the laps in the tank being very energetic, and other times they lay on the rock work pretending to be still life. I've even jumped around in front of the tank to get there attention and mostley they seem unamused unless i have a shrimp or something in my teeth. They have strange behavior, but have always been completely healthy. I have noticed that they will lay down more after feeding, or If they ate too much during feeding aswell. Try to cut back on the amount you are feeding a little bit and see if that helps to make him more energetic. If they don't need to search for food at all, do you blame them for staying in bed until you give it to them?

Excellent point by Orby regarding feeding Puffers. On Dogs and Porks once you see their belly begin to bulge that is it for that feeding. If fed to much they will lay around till the food digests and they do get lazy. They will eat as much as you put in till they sink to the bottom. So overfeeding can be a culprit in their activity.
