Leaking sump....

The sump Acrylic51 built for me has decided to leak, the hoses are dry as a bone, the only thing wet is the bottom of the stand and water pooling on my carpet in front of the tank. I'm so upset... I have to dump the water and remove the sump, I have no choice. All it was used for was the extra water and my in-sump skimmer....But I love that sump...

Okay... it wasn't the sump, it was the refugium section...which is completely separated, not by chambers as many of you know, it's a totally separate tank with bulkheads and PVC pipe feeding into the sump.

I had news paper rolled up and set beside and behind the fuge to help insulate it, because I need my tank to stay cold and not run the chiller constantly. The paper absorbed quite a bit of water before it went to the floor...but the wood inside the stand is warped under where the fuge sat.

I can salvage the sump, that way I stll have some extra water volume and a place for my skimmer. I just will not have that extra water from the refugium. I will have to redo the hose system to a single instead of a double...it will have a project to for next month since next week is Passover, and I have enough to spend my money on and work to do.

Now for the question, is my stand okay or do I have to replace it? The bottom wood inside the stand is warped but the sides of the stand and the top where the tank sits looks good and strong still...the doors are still straight so the only warped part is the underside itself. It kind of looks like what would be under a sink, a thin piece of plywood.

The stand should be ok once it dries out. Is the warping pretty bad?

On the one corner where the fuge leaked...yes. But I was looking at it, the thin board is already pulled away from the main frame, it isn't supporting it just sits flush on the bottom of the stand...It's warped upward about an inch.

glad you found the leak
hopefully you got it fixed
sorry you have the leak
if the vertical supports on the stand dry out, are not rotted or warped you should be ok. that's what supports the weight
the horizontal shelving keeps those in line but don't take hardly any weight

I think you have a similar stand to the one I have for my 50g tank. It just has that thin 1/4" plywood for the base of the stand. It's a tough call without seeing pics. If nothing else I'd leave it but pull all of the equipment out and lay a thicker sheet of plywood down in there. If your stand is on top of carpet than that could have caused the thin plywood to flex or become uneven which could have contributed to the five springing a leak.
Another problem you might run into would be wet carpet under the stand. That will take a while to dry if left alone and will most likely lead to unpleasant odors for a while and or mildew.

Flower................ Why didn't you call me? We could have put our heads together and figured out a way to fix this. I've got all the tools to fix your stand and the leak in the fuge. What are friends for anyway?

Hi everyone....

It was the sump, once I pulled everything out I could see where it leaked by looking at the wood, and water started in the front and then went to the other side where the refugium (18g not 5g) was and pooled there, the news paper I had rolled up as insulation to keep the water cool from the chiller, was soaked and heavy.

Silverado, you weren't on line, I lost your number so I couldn't call...So please call me, I don't need tank help anymore, but I do have some extra equipment you may need. LOL...Now if you would like to come clean my carpets for Passover, just let me know....I have my own carpet cleaner and everything.

I actually wrestled that thing out all by myself, and got the return and all the hoses apart. It took me all day but I got it. There was no room for dipping the water out from the sump under the stand, so I used a pump, and when it got too low for the pump, I was able to tilt it enough to get the water down to about 2 inches before wrestling it out altogether. I can't believe all the equipment I had under there. I now have ugly pumps in my display.

I couldn't for the life of me figure out exactly what was leaking on it. The sides seemed just fine and it wasn't leaking from the bottom. The water, once filled to half full would just seep out in the front from some invisible place.... and even if it were to be fixed and resealed, I wouldn't trust it. I have two C4 fluval HOBs for mechanical filtration, and plenty of macroalgae, oh and the Aquripure nitrate filter. That's going to be how it remains. My carpet is still soaked, and right when I have one week left preparing for Passover, any mildew smells should be good and in full force by then....

My Mother woke me up in the middle of the night to tell me the floor in front of the fish tank was "wetter"... I had to get up to check just in case the tank itself decided to take a dive, I couldn't just dismiss the water as the result of the sump. So 3:00am I'm up looking all around the bottom of the tank with a flashlight and paper towel to check for any water just to be sure. The water is just still soaking into the carpet from under the stand, and there is nothing I can do but let it run it's coarse. I do have a shop vac so I can get the water out once it's in the carpet, but what is under the stand....I can't do anything about.

I loved my sump, and it had so much sentimental value to me because of everyone here on the site being a part of it... but to be honest, I used canisters for 14 years without a single hiccup, it wasn't a nitrate factory either. The lifter pump gave me grief every time I turned around (I have over the past few years purchased 5 new lifter pumps, and the pre-filters) and now that I finally managed to get that problem overcome...the whole sump decided to rebel. Maybe if I keep telling myself that, I won't cry over losing the sump anymore. I will so miss my in sump Octopus skimmer....it was the only skimmer I ever had that worked like it should.

This breaks my heart, Flower. :(
I know you loved those tanks.

SIGH.... sorry for not answering before, Passover is a big chore to get the house ready, and then 2 days of Seders (religious formal dinners) LOL...No pizzas until Tuesday night, my mother has mentioned pizza 3Xs now, she must want some, at least she likes the matzo ball soup. Anyway, now I can rest a little and get back into my usual routine.

I did love that sump, and all the love that went with it from everyone here on the site. For now the 90g is running on 2 HOB filters, no skimmer. The macroalgae is happy and growing good again, it's a deep red instead of having gray tips. I'm pretty sure the macros are keeping the tank going. I do 3g water changes every day or at least every other day, depending on my energy level. I use the sea squirt to blast the rocks and sand each time as well.

On a topic not related, I have one kuda horse (in the 56g) that stays at the top of the tank, clinging to an air line and isn't eating, so he has my attention for now. I haven't "seen" him eat, but it's been two weeks ... he must be eating something. He just never moves from that spot.

Sounds like he might have found the perfect spot to survey his kingdom. lol.

If you need a skimmer I have my HOB BH100 that I'm not using. It's rated for a 75g. Maybe we could work out a cash trade for your skimmer.

SSSHHHH.....This conversation never happened...it isn't allowed to buy, sell or trade on the site.

That being said...to date I have never found a HOB skimmer I liked, not one, and I have had SW tanks for over 14 years now. I have come to the decision that with macroalgae, I don't really need one, so I'm just curious and want to ask, what brand is yours? I may as well sell my in sump one, I so hate the sound of that, it sounds so ........permanent.

The seahorse is on his side at the very tip top of the tank, clinging to the air line tube, I did catch him hanging upside down, no doubt searching for a nibble in the macros. If I mess with him at all he just freezes up, hugs the line real tight and pretends I don't see him.
