leather question

So I have a leather near the bottom of a 24" tank that has lost a lot of his color but still seems to be doing OK for the past six months. Is there anyway to bring back that color?
Ideas I had were to move him up higher in the tank where he'd both get more light, more water movement and less foot traffic from the hermits who seem to congregate around him.

What type of lighting do you have?When was the last time you replaced your bulbs?
How much water movement is there near it?If hermits are congregating it sounds like it is collecting algae..or might be ready to shed.
