Any time I've noticed brown string stuff coming from a coral it was dieing. :( My Torch is doing the same right now.

The stringy stuff is normal in unstable water conditions. It is trying to rid its outer layer of tissue hoping that then the water quality will somehow improve. It can survive but will need clean water soon. Luckily it is a leather and they can withstand a lot before they will wither away.
