LED lighting

It's still not a proven technology, and I still don't think you can justify the price.
Aquailluminations has just released a LED fixture, and PFO came out with the Galileo which is a more "economicall friendly" fixture. I know that the Solaris has a few kinks, but I still think you'd be better off with halide or T5.

I purchased the very expensive Solaris lights in May 2007. At first I was thrilled with them because you could program them for seasons, moonlight, etc. However, after 14 months I am very disappointed in them. We've had to replace many of the LEDs which the company did provide free of charge but you have to do diagnostics, send them in, and then wait for the replacements.
My corals (even the soft corals) are not growing as actively as I'd like although my water parameters are very good. So I have decided to get rid of the Solaris lights. Yikes, what a costly mistake that was.

A friend lent me his spare T5 lights while I am researching the new lights I want. After just two days the corals are much improved (plumper, more colorful, etc.). Even the fish are more active.

That stinks oceanlover. I wish you lived closer. I would love to do a PAR reading between that LED system and a couple of T5 fixtures I have.

I had the T5 lighting and I quickly traded back for my Power Compacts. They run waaaaay to hot, and they don't really put out that much more light, for the money. It's all about personal preference and you may just have to run with the trial and error thing, that's how I ended up with my light setup!

alot of stories of reliability have been circulating. I was never sold on performance (its advertised to be equal to 250w 20k MH which translates into less than half the PAR of a good 10k 250w bulb which translates into inferior to both T5 and MH concerning PAR). Not exactly what performance dreams are made of.
