length of ich in hypo

When you hypo a tank, because of ich on the fish, usually how long does it take for the visual signs of ich to go away?

I can't afford a refractometer, right now, over 100.00. The only thing I have besides a swinging arm hydrometer is a glass hydrometer/thermometer combo, will that work?
