I am going to put a 15 gallon high tank (as a sump)under my tank. I am going to put a 4" sand bed in it (Does it matter if its live sand or regular?) I am going to use my XP3 Rena Canister as my return (375 gallons a hr).Should I take the bio balls out of the canister. Is there a specific overflow box I should use or will any do? Where is the cheapest place to order one? I am going to put my hang on skimmer on the sump will that be alright? And what is Caulpera? & how does it help? Alot of questions, but please try to answer them, thanks!

I'll attack a few of your questions...use live sand in the sump, to gain the beneficial bacterial filtration properties of the sand. If you use a good amount of live rock in there in addition, you can do away with the bio balls, the rock and the sand will take care of that part of the filtration process. Caulerpa is a marine algae plant that is very beneficial in a sump. It competes with diatom and other nuisance algaes for nutrients, and provides a great source of natural food for your fish. Not sure about buying an overflow, hope someone else can help you there. Remember the sump should be lit 24 hours a day, especially if you have caulerpa in there.
