My wife and I went to San Fran a couple of years back and loved it! Fisherman’s Warf was really cool, lots of street vendors, great bars, aquarium, lots of interesting people, china town was really cool…

Not quite east coast, but how about northern Michigan? The fall colors are beautiful and there's the Great Lakes and a lot of smaller lakes too so its similar to east coast in that respect. Plus its kind of off-season so it will be less crowded and there should be some good deals but its usually not too cold...just chilly enough to be cozy.
There are tons of bed and breakfasts all over (a lot of them lakefront) and several nice towns such as Mackinac City/Mackinaw Island, Traverse City, Petoskey, etc. plus there are a couple of casinos up that way if you are into that sort of thing.
My husband and I love it and always try to visit at least once each fall.

hahahahahahahaha.northern michigan....sorry, i'm sure its wonderful, but I'm from northern Indiana, about 15min from the border of MI...and so it would be kind of a waste of my airline tickets when i could drive.....
Thanks for all so far, keep em' coming!

Well, for a tropical paradise, go to the keys, You can camp, or if you aren't in to camping, they have hotels.
As for a FALL fall, I would suggest the Piedmont in SC, or NC, some of the most beautiful scenery ever!
They have fewer bed and breakfasts, but they are smaller, and cozier. And if you find the right location, you can look out over waterfalls, rolling hills of oranges, reds, and browns. Also the weather isn't friggid, but it isn't broiling, like light sweater weather.
But plan it carefully, because if you don't, you may run into some nast rains, where it won't be pleasant, at all. :-

I used to see them on the travel channel back when I had TV. Surely a google would turn some up. They looked incredible....Atlantic sunrises and all.
