Lets talk about bulbs.

What type of MH setup do you have? What size tank is it over, what type of bulbs are in it, and why are you using this setup.

When I decided to go MH, I ordered a retro kit. I put in 1 - 175watt 12000K along with 2 NO 15watt 18" 18000K flourescents.
These sit over a 55 gallon reef tank. 2 bubble corals, 1 meat coral, assorted shrooms, feather dusters, coral banded shrimp, green brittle star, red hermits, turbo snails, yellow cucumber, emerald crab, yellow ball sponges, and assorted critters that came on the live rock.
Why did I go with this? Just personal preference.:D

check out "BlueLine" bulbs, they are Metal Halide that look like actinics. I have a post that should still be on top about them.

Well sure I have bulbs/lights....but I run a combination of PC's & VHO's on mine.
I will eventually be running 2x400 watts of MH combined with 4x110 watts of actinic VHO....but that is down the road a bit. Several members here can probably answer with personal MH choices.........

Hi I recently upgraded my lighting over my 29 gallon tank.
I now have
250 HQI icecap ballast
AB 10 K 250 watt bulb
I got the AB b/c as of now there isn't any 20K 250 watt HQI bulbs out there. The AB gives a nice crisp white light with a shade of blue in it. Someone said they are actually 13 K but I can't substantiate that.

~ I forgot to metion I run the light in a sunlight supply reefoptix pendent

120 gallon tank with 2 X 110 watt VHO actinic (URI bulbs & Icecap 430 ballast), 2 X 110 watt VHO aquasuns (URI bulbs & Hello Lights ballast), and 2 X 250 watt MH (Aqualine Bushke bulbs 10000K, and PFO ballast). Just switched today to the AB bulbs from Sunburst 12000K. AB bulbs are a lot less blue than the Sunburst and a lot more yellow. I have a mainly SPS dominated tank. Looking for best coral colors and good growth rates.
The box the AB bulbs come in say 13000K on the outside but it says 10000K on the bulb itself. Mine have no hint of blue. I will see if they color shift over the next week or so. Many bulbs do this after the 80-100 hour burn-in period.

Golfish,
I agree, I had a chance to see Griss's ( -- mod ) and he runs the same setup as you do. It is very impressive! The best of both world. Have you heard when the 20K 250 HQI bulb is coming out. I read the thread over on -- but no one could pin down a date.

Golfish,
Sounds good, I will just wait and see what sanjay has to say about it. You would have thought with the success of the radium 20 K they would have worked on this bulb a while ago.

Plum,
Well I am not really the one to ask about VHO. In general you have pretty low light, you could go with some shrooms or leathers. I would start there and see how it goes. How old is the tank?
Instead of using this thread why not start a new thread of your own? You would probably get a lot more responces doing that :)
Your best bet is first to decided what you would like to keep and then as specific questions, we are always happy to help!

Ya know its kinda weird to see some of the responses to this thread. It pretty much seems like everyone has there own prefrence for bulbs. But most it seems are using 10k MH bulbs with actinic VHO's..
