I have been at the salt water thing for a while and read the old books when I began way back, but havnt kept up on the advances in the last bunch of years. I see a lot of talk about refugiums and have come to understand what they do(somewhat), but do not know if I would benifit from the use of one. I have a 120gal with huge wet/dry and a canister fliter. This has been the type of setup I have used for 10+ years. I have had fish only tanks mostly, with just a few inverts here and there, but never corals.
The reason I consider a refugium is that I now have the opportunity to place the tank against a wall where I could locate the entire filter system behind. My thoughts are: Ditch the wet/dry sump for a 75gal AGA tank as a sump behind the wall(with pump, skimmer, bio-balls, <DSB maybe>, etc. located inside), with a 30 gal AGA used as a refugium, 6 to 10 inched higher than the 75 sump, fed by gravity and provided circulation with a small pump.
I intend to have fish only, and preditory fish at that!
I must admit that I do kinda neglect the water change thing, but would this refugium help out a great deal?
I have also heard that refugiums can have their own problems as well, so dont think a refugium is a fool proof thing....
Thanks!
