I just put in some domino damselfish after cycling with cocktail shrimp, and the levels seem to be elevated slightly. Is this common for the addition of fish?

Yes. Your tank cycled/developed a balance between ammonia and nitrites and the bacteria that convert them to nitrates for the tank with the shrimp. Now that you have added fish, their waste and any uneaten food are creating more ammonia than your tank is ready for so it will take a little time to adjust bacteria again.
Feed lightly for the next few days and continue to watch your water parameters.
