So Iv'e been preparing, now ready to add a Powder Blue. I go to my favorite lfs this morning & he has none at all. So then I go to my second choice lfs, where I remember seeing a beutiful pb there about a week ago, maybe 3" long, for $60. Today I see he's missing so I ask the guy if he sold him. He said "no, he's in the back". On our way back I ask WHY? "He had a couple spots". Upon inspection, I didn't see anything but asked if he was running copper..."Nah". Then you must be hypo-ing..."Nah". So what are you doing? He responded..."I jacked it up to 85. This is proven to fry any ick a fish has. See all fish have ick, they are naturally born with it, it's in their genes, but it only appears when a fish is stressed. But the 85 temp blast will kill it on the spot. He should be ready by tomorrow...you want him?"
NoooThankyou

So did you try and straiten this guy out? You'd be doing all of their customers a favor...

If it were a fresh water tank he would of been partially correct, until he kept his trap going about genes and being born with it and all that nonsense... Oh yea and the fact that he has a SW fish hes treating...

Raising temp MAY speed up the life cycle of the parasite, but that's all. It also MIGHT give the fish a few "spotless" days to find a buyer. if the lfs is lucky. Yet another example of why I have bought all my fish inline from reputable dealers for years....and will always do so.

I would have offered him $20 to take the fish off his hands, ich and all, then brought it home and treated it properly.

I didn't even start to try. I was just dumbfounded. When I first posted this, I thought the guy was just blowing me smoke, but after thinking about it I wonder if he doesn't really believe this because he was so adament about me not being able to get it until he was finished with his little medical care. What a moron.

I hope that it wasn't the owner of the LFS giving you that advice.

No, not the owner, but a worker in charge of all of the sw section. It's really a small petshop that has everything (thus why it's not my first choice). He has only been into SW for about 6 months so I have been going by to keep checking out his inventory.

He's not very smart, but not completely wrong. heat with any parasite speeds up development the and shortens the life span. By increasing the temp in an aqaurium you can make the parasite develope faster than they can reproduce and/or cause seriouse harm to your beloved fish. with that said there are parasite that thrive in warmer water. so this is not a cure for ich. never the less i still have my qt temp set to 85 and so far so good.

No way 85 kills ick. My DT is 85 and a fish still got ick.
85 is too high for most fish and inverts, unless they are from a warm climate, naturally. If you have ich issues then it needs to be dealt with. Feel free to post in Disease and Treatment. We will be more than happy to help you.

Your temp. is more than likely what spurred the ich on.
Ich is not spurred on. It is a parasite with a known life cycle. It is easily treated and can be avoided in the display.

My post had nothing to do with what you said. If it did then I would have quoted you.

Yeah, I guess this one could have fallen in the disease & treatment section, but I was posting more along the lines of my encounter with a lfs moron while searching for a fish, so that's why I put it up here in the Fish discussion. I just assumed most here would know that 85 temp (though high heat may speed up the ick cycle) will absolutely not kill ick. And the rest of what he had to say was almost humorous. Sep, how'd you like the part about it being in there genes?

Oh, that is priceless! I was at my LFS a few weeks ago and this guy was talking up a storm to the guy that was acclimating fish. He started talking about tangs and how they all have a bacteria on their body that eats away at their slime coat. He spoke like he knew it ALL about how ANY tang is hard to keep. They die in no time in captivity, he ranted about. In that situation, with his "I know it all" attitude. I would have been there all day trying to convince him other wise. I let it go. That is someone who probably lost many tangs due to lack of knowledge and now "knows all", and is happy to preach all of the wrong information.
