lfs vs. Me

K, didn't make it to the fish store I wanted to this last weekend. But..I needed various supplies so went to 'stupid' lfs. Was once again talking about a blenny. This guy insists.........INSISTS...that the blenny's do not need live rock or algae. That they will eat brine shrimp, algae pads....shrimp pellets. K, daughter wants another blenny....she wants something other than a scooter that she saw so I have to research it once I find out what it's called...think it is orangish maybe. Hmmmm. Anyway...what do you feed your blenny's, IF you don't have a lot of live rock? thank you once again.

well without live rock for blenny's it will starve itself until it dies. It needs live rock to graze on. It happened to me when i had a 30g without live rick and the blenny and also a mandarin died

Uh Oh, here comes Mr. Technicality Man.
A Scooter Blenny is not a blenny, it is a dragonette.
Blennies do not need live rock, but they do need a lush algal growth. Nori seaweed and alge pads will not cut it.

how long before you get a lush algae growth....how 'old' does the tank have to be? Also, can you get algae 'scrapes' from say...the lfs and 'plant' or 'start' it?

With proper over feeding, poor tap water, no water changes, no skimmer, and running the lights 24-7 you should be algae laden in no time.

Oh, and fishnerd, thanks....that's the kind of comment that is highly unappreciated. Will make me wonder about any advice you ever give. All I wanted was a straight answer. Thanks.

Hey fishnerd...first) not all blennies need algea to the extent you imply (you're probably thinking of a lawnmower blennie)...second) your comment indicates you're an idiot...(I was going to say *** but decided to tone it down just a bit)

[Edit: please watch the language]

Bash me all you want. Can anyone else give a better way to grow algae. (more sarcasm)
BTW I was trying to be humorous in my approach, but I guess you two don't like to laugh. If you seriously believe I was being truthful with what described in my last post you should reconsider your own thought process.
A reasonably intellegent person would have caught on to my sarcasm when they read "With PROPER overfeeding" Proper overfeeding is an oxymoron, no I'm not calling anyone a moron, but I need to be politically correct for those without a sense of humor.
Lighten up!

Another thing... you BOTH responded to Scoobydoo and my post on lobsters BEFORE you responded to my comment on algae. Have you caught on yet?

My bicolor blenny doesn't eat much. You won't need much algea to keep it well fed. I have some herbivore food just incase but i always have algea in the tank.
I used to see lots of lip prints on my algea before. Hardly see them now.
I think its because he has been eating prime reef flakes, and brine shrimp.

"nerd" you must be pretty young...if you had read any of Loppy's posts you'd realize that she has been unjustly hashly criticized before and you'd be at least a little sensitive to her feelings...it's very rude to be "sarcastic" with people who are offended by it and or don't know you well enogh to realize you are just trying to be "funny"...i'd suggest being a little more careful as to how you respond to people...i.e. show a little maturity

Thank you to the ones that gave me the answers I was looking for.....and for the one who came to my defense.
I have a terrific sense of humor.....that post didn't sound funny at all, it sounded like xxxxxx trying to make me look stupid, there for making himself look smart. whoooo. Keep it to yourself cuz..........you are not funny at all.
Funny is MolaMola, now that's funny!

Holy cow, when I first read this I thought it was pretty darn funny and didn't come back to this thread. (BTW, Molamola is my bestest friend in the whole wide world (in case she reads this) and agree she is pretty darn funny too). I'm having a hard time seeing the issue...and it is hard to know when people are offended by sarcasm. I've read little in Loopy's previous posts to see that she is offended by such things. If anyone here can give me a list of who is offended by what, life would be much easier.
Fishnerd all I can suggest is the more frequent use of smilies?
Feel free to disagree with Fishnerd on whether the lush growth of algae is required, but man.....don't escalate an issue folks if you think it is a problem. A "hey I hope your joking cause I'm a little confused" is a good way to allow someone to clarify something.

I AM sorry, but I don't 'know' this person, and it did and still does sound sarcastic to me. I am not ultra sensitive, but I don't like to be made to look stupid either, and that's just how I took that answer. I thought it was rude. Smiley's would have clued my in that this was meant to be funny.
Sorry. Best thing is to just get rid of this thread imo. :notsure:

This sort of thing happens a lot on these boards. We all (both sides) tend to forget what is "lost" in written word on these forums. We lose some context, we lose any info on the nature of the person writing, we lose facial expression and a whole manner of things. Happens a lot...probably one of the number on reasons things get out of hand. That is why the "lobster" thread is somewhat unusual. Lots of "Sorry" and "I disagree" and "hey wasn't trying to offensive" etc etc. I think we have to try and remember to do this, and along with smilies and a lot of IMO's, LOL's and such, we'll get by. Just whenever someone says something possibly nasty, turn it around positively or give your opinion calmly...I could look at fishnerd's comment and say "hey that's my tank exactly, sweat/sweet, LOL!" (as Mola knows, these words confuse me so I always write them both).
Yes, I am trying to get us all to kiss and make up. I'm inspired by the lobster thread. :)

No, the question really wasn't answered. So.......I'd ask again, but I'd probably get 'reworked' and get send to Disney.com or Barbie.com every time I tried to get to this site.........so da heck wit it.:nervous: I am goin fishy shoppin tonight and I am gonna buy 'bout 16 fishies and dump 'em all in the tank...and I'm gonna scrape algae from their tanks and bring it home...then I am gonna turn out the lights, cut the electricity, dump a entire can of food in and take of on a road trip in one of the 15 hot cars in my garage and cruise the U.S. for a few days, maybe go visit MolaMola. I used to live in FT Worth, need a good cowboy fix!

Betta?????????????????

LOL LOL LOL LOL
OH, and my garage is about to fall down...and I drive a 'mom's car...i.e. mini van and a jeep, and NO, I don't look hot in the jeep...
unfortunaley, my 13 year old daugher does. HO HUM.
Yes, thinks get lost in the written word, too bad you all aren't a writer like me.......such a wonderful (jobless) profession. lol again.
K, kissing now......................oooooxxxxxxoooooxxxxxooooooooooxxxxxxxxxoooooooooooooooxxxxxxxxxxxooooooooooooooxxxxx
