LFS water salinity/Is this Normal?

I went to a LFS today and the guy told me they keep their water salinity at
.016. He said less chance of getting any disease in the tanks. My tank salinity is .025, would that be too much of a gap for the fish even with three to four hours acclimation like he said? I always thought fish stores had their salinity between .022 and .025 . What do you think?

Hmmm.... if that was the case, wouldn't everybody do that? Doesn't sound right to me. One of these days im going to test the water from my lfs after i buy a fish there.

.025 is fine depending on what fish you have. keep it between .020-.025. when acclimating the fish add some of your water into the water the fish is in and let it sit for 10-15 mins.
i know people will acclimate fish for hours, I dont. at most half hour, all my fish turn out just fine.
i let the bag the fish is in sit in the water for 5 mins, than mix the water and let it sit for 10-15 than slowly allow the fish to swim out into the tank (on its own), than shut the tank light off for the rest of the night.

similar to my acclimation. heck, i've thrown sailfin mollies into SW direct from 100% fresh and they've done fine.

nice. i have a 30 gal feeder tank with sw mollies. i failed at it though
. when my mollies gave birth it was hard for me to toss the new borns into the shark aquarium to be eatin , so i ended up not doing it and now i have 5 mollies with no purpose
, i had a bunch of ghost shrimp in their but they all got eatin, no problem tossing those in the tank especially when they're great live food to get stuborn sharks and lionfish to eat. ill probibly end up giving my mollies back to my buddie and he can just toss me some frozen food or guppies.

haha, one molly veered too close to my carpet anemone and it ate him. So do ghost shrimp do ok in salt water too?

Yeah it's normal for LFS to keep it around 1.019 in an effort to starve off ick and disease. However, in a long term setting it will become detrimental to the fish.

A couple of things ned to be noted.
First, it's not really suggested you ever let the bagged water enter your tank. Some systems run copper. for instance.
Second, low salinity will kill inverts. Keep your tank as close to 1.026 SG that you can. Once you start getting around 1.022 and lower you are really endangering any inverts you have.

A LFS keeping water at 1.016 is normal for their fish only tanks. Ich dies at 1.009 so keeping at 1.016 is just their way to save money on salt. Like Journeyman said, some stores run copper in their fish only tanks to help out with parasites. Their tanks with corals, rocks, and inverts will be between 1.022-1.027.
