Life Expectancy for Rio Pumps

I have a 2100 returning water from my sump. Didnt know better at the time to get something else. I am just wondering how long i can expect this thing to last before it bursts into flames as i am told it will do. It runs loud every now and then, i try to keep it completely submerged, that seems to help. Would a maxijet be a good upgrade or should i look for something else for a 55 gal tank??

I have used and am still using rio,s I have never had a problem with them. I ran a rio 2500 for three years and never once had a problem. I am now running I think it is rhe rio 4500 it is the biggest one that they have. I have been running that for over a year with no problems. I also run Mag drives with the same results no problems. Maybe that guy just had a bad pump. The only time i had a problem with a rio is when I was runningthe rio's 600's on my wave maker. The wave maker would kill the impellers and i would have to change them every four or five months. but never had I had one blow up on me or anything like that. I think that they are good pumps.

Not sure how long it will run, but people have different experiences with them, most of them not good. There's a post today about one blowing up.
I have a maxi-jet 700 for my 72 gal bow front, and the only way I know it's running is from the water noise from the overflow. I have heard they are a good pump, and I found mine for $50, which I felt was reasonable. It produces zero heat and zero noise, and can be used either submersed or in line (not submersed).
HTH, and good luck!
PS - If its starting to make noise, it's only a matter of short time. When mechanical equipment fails, it usually fails in a hurry.

Rios are like playing Russian Roulette. I had one melt down in my sump, and there are far too many reported problems with these pumps on this board and many others. Why take the chance when there are many good ones out there with good track records like mag drive or maxis.

I just had one litereally blow up last night, thank god it was in a bucke of water, I had it for 3 months, I got it december 26th 2001. It was a rio 1100. I bought two rio 1100's and one maxi jet 600. The maxi is silent, ,and I mean silent, The only way I can tell it's on is by looking for floating stuff to get zipped along by the current. both rios I had were fairly quiet for about 2 months, then they were loud. one died yesterday, Thankfully I was able to return it for an instore credit. I shelled out an extra 23 dollars and replacecd it with a maxijet 1200. so now I have a maxi 600 and a maxi 1200, and one rio 1100 I will be replacing the last 1100 very soon(as soon as money can afford, likely not til the end of the month though).
Something to keep in mind about rio's the warentee is only 120 days, compared to a full year with the maxi's.
I would go for a maxi.
Read my post for the details on how it blew up.

a rio should last forever as long as it stays in the store and you don't buy one!!!!!!!! why not look into mag drive pumps? i've been using them for years in various applications without any problems what so ever.

Definately get rid of the RIO. I had been running a RIO 2700 on my protein skimmer. After about 9 months it began to get noisy and then one day I got home from work just intime to hear it make a really strange noise. When I checked the skimmer it was stopped so I put my hand in the water to check the pump and got a hell of a jolt. Fortunately I had gotten home just before it happened or else I would have had cooked fish.
