Anyone got any crafty set ups they made or bought that would be used to lift thier 4' or 6' light off of whatever height it is normaly for maintenance purposes?

I think it's giesemann that has hanging cables with brakes on them. You push a lever on each side with your thumbs and lift the fixture and the cables are retracted into a small spool, then just do the opposite to lower it back down.

My bad, Go to sunlight supply's site and search for lift. It their sun lift system. M Depot sells them. Sorry, cant link it, competitors dont ya know.
Giesemann might also have some

interesting idea, but not really what I'm looking for. those only hold 22 lbs and for a larger light I don't think that would be enough.
I was thinking more like.... your light has two or 4 holes for attaching on both ends so you run the cbles out of the attachment points to a single cable over the center of the fixture and that cable runs through an eyelet and down to the wall where you have a small crank that can stop each time you turn it. like a winch pully for getting your boat on the trailer. and then when you're done you just take the pressure off the system by turning the crank a bit past the stop and push in the stop and slowly crank it backwards back down to the tank.
For alot of people this may be ugly, but the back of my tank is in its own compartment in the wall, so ugly is not a concern :)

or better yet, some electric box that does the same thing, you push the up button and goes up, down and it goes down

I checked it out...it is allot of rigging for a light, so not worth it. It is easier to just remove the lights when doing water changes.
You might try looking into those hinges they have for toy boxes. They stay put to not allow toy box tops to fall on kids heads...they might work. The only real problem is that they are metal and may rust...

im slowly adding rock to my system right now and with taht and water changes and flipping snails ect it would be handy to have something to get the light out of the way. My light takes up most of the top of my 90 gallon and being that its in the wall there is barely room for me to get tweezers in there for feeding my lion and flipping snails.
Big drawback to the inwall thing I guess
