T5 and halide are very comparable, and each have their advantages and disadvantages. From a T5 versus VHO perspective, a watt is a watt. A watt of T5 produces the same light energy as a watt of VHO, but the smaller diameter of a T5 lamp lends itself to dramatic increases in reflector efficiencies, making them blow VHO out of the water (no pun intended).
