go with a 2x 150, or better yet 2 x 250 watt halide fixture with actinic supplement. you'll be able to keep anything you want and your tank will look beautiful, even empty.

Either 5 or 6 bulb T5 fixture with individual reflectors. Either TEK or Aquatinics make great fixtures. They will be cheaper than Metal Halides and cost less to run. The only difference is that you wont get the shimmer effect in the water that you get from MH. Other than that you'd be able to keep whatever you wanted.

I get the shimmer effect with T-5s by pointing a MJ-1200 at the surface. Mind you its not like MH's but still a little shimmer is better then no shimmer...

an anemone is something that requires a stable tank, but more importantly, alot of light. you can get lighting online, or at your lfs. check the "for sale" section here for used units, or check the popular reef supply websites. we aren't allowed to mention the names of competitors here.

they won't be that much cheaper to run. 500 watts of metal halide v.s. 6 x 54 watts of t5, is only 176 watts less. no big deal.
plus, the 48" 6 lamp fixture from aquatinics is about 850 bucks, and then you have to buy bulbs...that's more expensive than a metal halide fixture, not less.

The Nova Extreme Pro 48" 6 x 54W T5's (including bulbs!) is less than $400, shipped, and can keep any coral in a 55gal tank with this fixture.

I have t5's and am now wishing that I had gone with MH. The diffence is unreal. I know someone that has two frag tanks next each other. One has MH and the other has t5's. The diffence is amazing the MH looks so much better. As for running them the increase in electral bill won't be much different.
I can keep any corals under my t5's so if go with t5's don't worry about not begin about keep corals or clams.
