if my tank measures 20 inches across...do in need to get a 20 inch light fixture or can i get lets say a 18 inch fixture..???

there are ways to use a smaller or bigger fixture. i.e. hanging from the ceiling. but the cleanest looking way is getting the correct length so that the fixture sits on the rim of the tank.

As long as you have a way of mounting the light, the length doesn't matter.
