Lighting a 47 gallon column

Question regarding lighting for a 47 gallon column 20" x 18"x 30". I have been researching and preparing for a much larger tank but my space is limited and I will not be buying a larger house like I had planned.
I found this column tank and Petsmart and I really like the dimensions for the space I have set aside but it is deep. I plan to build my live rock all the way up the back and cover it with LPS and maybe some softies. Will a 20" T5 strip give me enough penetration or will I have to go with a Halide? The depth is the reason for adding softies since I was planning on placing them closer to the bottom of the tank. If I have to go with halides I was planning on using a Sunpod.

Well, there is the new oddesea pendant from aquatraders for a flat hundred that has a 150w MH and 2 24w actinic t5s mounted in it. Some people are leery of using this brand b/c of different issues, so I'm NOT "recommending" it. Just mentioning that it's out there. I almost got it for my 37g column, but decided to go with a PC fixture since I knew this was going to be a softie-only tank with seahorses, and the MH heat was going to be an issue for the horses. Check out the oddessea thread for some frank opinions pro and con for this brand...it's here in the diy section also I believe.
