Lighting / Ballasts???

My ballasts are playing games with me.. I currently have "Star" ballasts.
I'm looking at the Icecap ballasts:
I'm trying to understand the concept of fluorescents vs. ballasts.
How many fluorescents can I run off a single Icecap 660? Or even a 430?
I know the 660 is capable of 440W and the 430 is capable of 320W. Does that mean that I could run all of my six 40W fluorescents off just ONE Icecap ballast? My six 40W lights would come out to 240W total...
I guess the only use of having separate ballasts would be to have them on separate timers, right? That way you could have morning/dusk photo periods.... correct?

It is my understanding that even though you can run standard flouresent bulbs on your Icecap...the life of the bulbs will be greatly reduced. Myself ... if I was going to use the 660 I'd just go with a couple of VHO's(2x110 watts of URI super actinics & 2x110 watts of URI aquasuns).
Myself I use the LN electronics VHO ballast and run 2x110 URI super actinics...if the VHO is available I'd much rather have them than standard bulbs any day...

I have a 90g and I'm using an Icecap 660 with (2) aquasuns, (1) 50/50 and (1) actinic. I also added a second NO ballist from Home Depot. I use an actinic from the NO for sun/up sun/down. I am very pleased with the Icecap ballist. It runs cool and is very reliable.
Go for it.
