lighting distance

I am looking at either customizing my current canopy or building a new on. I currently have started to build a new one but now that I am thinking about it I would be able to just modify the one that came with my tank. The major thing that is going to make or break this deal is the lighting. When all is said and done I am wanting T5 bulbs in there and well I need to know what a good distance from the water would be? If I can stick with what I have that is great, if not I am going back to the construction side of things. If someone could just answer that question that would be great, and thanks for your help.

It depends on a variety of factors. T5 lighting can usually be placed fairly close to the water as long as the fixture is protected with a glass/acrylic panel or something along those lines. Exposed lamps should be at least 6-8" above the water for safety reasons.

I run metal halides and vho's and I have them about 10 to 12 inches above the water.
