I posted this a couple of days ago but since then have read so many opinions on lighthing. Does anyone know if this lighting system is a good one:
Current USA Sunpod 48" 300w MH & Lunar Strip
Or am I better off with the PC lighting system with 84 more watts? (Coral Life Aqualight 48"Deluxe Plus 384w PC & Lunar )
They both are around the same price which is really my limit right now.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!! :help:
Thanks!

It all depends on what you plan to keep and how you want your tank to look, what size tank is it??? IMO, I would go with MH's anyday as they give better lighting and you won't be limited to the corals you want to get. :happyfish

Mine is a 55 gallon. I've had FO for about a year and love my tank. At this point I've decided to attempt a reef tank but really need to keep lighting under $550.
Are you familiar with Current Sunpod MH's?

I'm not familiar with sunpods, but someone on here has it and it works just fine for him. But he added in supplement lighting like I told him to and it's working better for him now. I told him to add in Actinics as supplement lighting along with the sunpod. You will need two MH's over your 55. Maybe save more money to get the correct system? So you won't have to mess with it later. On my 55, I run 2-175w MH 14k and 2-110w VHO Super Actinics. I have the dawn to dusk effect with moon lights. :happyfish

IMO, if its for a reef then go with Sunpod. The 14,000K HQI metal halides will be a nice color and may not want/need any supplimental lighing. It has a lot more moon lights in white and blue to help anyway, plus it should come with built in timers and mounts I think. Replaceing the bulbs in the future should be about the same cost as well as if it were 4 PCs..

Thanks for the info. So you've not heard any thing bad as far as quality goes out of the Current Sunpod's then. They're dependable?
Is there another brand/manufacturer of MH's that I should be looking for?

I want to ask the same things. which brand is good for MH? I saw there's Coral Life one. It has MH and PC, even Luar lights in one set. Does anyone have good experience on it? Thanks!

Actually I think there is an Orbit one by Sunpod that has MH , Lunar, and Actinics. It says its a 24 hour system for around $500-600. I would love to hear from someone that has one. Also if I got a system like that and it had 2 10k bulbs in it could I put a 20k bulb and a 10k bulb in the same unit? or would this cause other problems or look strange?

All depending on what you plan to keep. I would go with MH. If you have a decent canopy, you can get retrofit kits to save you some money. I'm gonna be running 2-250w MH retrofit kit with ARO Electronic Ballast and 20k XM bulbs. No need for supplement lighting here. I'm running this set in my 90g Bowfront RR, just waiting for my custom made canopy to get here, already have the kit waiting..... :happyfish

In my existing 55g reef tank, I'm running 2-175w SE MH 14k, 2-110w VHO Super Actinics, and Moon Lights. It's a canopy set from the popular auction site. :happyfish

So with a 90 gallon 48 x 18.5 x 25 would I need 2 -250w MH ? I am going to keep coral and dont want to be limited on what I can get. I would rather get something I am happy with now then have to spend more money to upgrade later. Also if retrofiting is a good thing can someone point me to a site that sells stuff I can retrofit? I am also very curious to brand opinions. I read somewhere that 2-150 mh is a good for a 25 inch deap tank. Is that not true? I worry if I get 2-250w mh I am going to add to much heat but I need advise on this. Thanks

I have had the Orbit (at the time the design was by Custom Sealife) and the Current Sunpod. Just got the Sunpod as a matter of fact. Go for the MH. I love mine. It is such a better quality of illumination. If you don't need the MH, you won't be sorry with the Orbit. I had mine for a few years and it's really quite a lot of light for the money.

Just mount some PC fans in your hood for cooling. Try aquacave, that's where I'm getting mine. 150's are nice, but 90 gallon tank is pretty deep. I would go for 2-250w SE MH. :happyfish
