Lighting for 30 gal high....

I'm setting up a new 30 gal tank (24"x24"x12"). I really want a lighting system that has moonlights incorporated. I found a system that has 1-65w Dual Daylight (10,000K & 6,700K) & 1-65w Dual Actinic (460nm & 420nm) and 2 moonlights in the same ballast. I will only be keeping mushrooms, soft corals, etc. I'm just afraid this will not be sufficient light to penetrate the 24"...any suggestions? :joy:

It might be OK, but it is probably pushing it. Anyway for you to fit more than 2 PC bulbs on there? You could always make yourself a canopy and fit four 75w VHO bulbs in there for a total of 300w... which would be great.

My problem is I'm not the handy type and am somewhat reluctant to try and do anything myself...haha. I'm afraid if I do, it won't look that great and I'll end up electrocuting myself or something. Is is really that difficult to do? I'm also looking for something which is somewhat cost efficient...i.e. $200-250 range.

You should check out the new, well new to me, aqualight hang on. It's a 150w MH fixture that clamps right on to the tank. As for the moonlight you want I would check with the odessya brand. You might spend just under $300 in total w shipping.

It isn't HARD to do, but you do need to be handy with a ruler, a drill and a saw.

A ruler and a drill i can handle...the saw kinda scares. If I do decide to retrofit...what is the best lighting combination....how much would the 3 75W VHOs that wax suggested be around? And would I just be adding this to a pre-made canopy?

may i suggest the 24 inch odyssea lights. Check that great auction site it goes for about 150. It has a 150 watt mh, dual Pc 24 watts and 2 moonlights. Many people will say it sucks but those are people that havent used it. I have had it on my tank for a month or so and love it.
