Lighting for my Cube

I sorely need to do more research on this and would like to be pointed in the direction of where to read up on this. I will tell you what I know and what I would like, you can then tell me where to go (LOL) and read up on this so that I can make a better informed decision.

I will have a 24x24x24 60 gallon cube style tank. It will have a 15 or so gallon sump. the inhabitants will be as detailed in this post - https://forums.saltwaterfish.com/forum/thread/379818/new-aquarist/60#post_3303601.

I would like to have 1 assembly to house all the lights. I would prefer to not have to make it myself as I am not a carpenter. Realistically, I could mount things to a piece of wood, but getting that piece of wood to match up in size with other pieces of wood to go over the tank as a canopy is where my problem comes into play. I am aware that it would be cheaper if i were to make my own, but my fears of making it prohibit my willingness to try it. I would like to have the ability to have the blue lights on 1 hour before the white lights turn on. I did see that there is specific lights for "coral growth" to help them and would like to incorperate them into the lighting as well. So i need some system that has the ability to have 2 different sets of lights on at 2 different times. I see this kind of setup but know that i might have to change the order of the lights:

Blue accent light - come on at 10 am off at midnight
Coral Growth light - come on at 11 am off at 11 pm
White Light - come on at 11 am off at 11 pm
White Light - come on at 11 am off at 11 pm
Coral Growth light - come on at 11 am off at 11 pm
Blue accent light - come on at 10 am off at midnight

I am aware that 6x lights in one housing is going to be hard to find and expensive. This will make the diy part easier and more cost effective. I would like to have T5HO lights, but I do know that metal hylide lights would be better. There is the price involved and would I have to explain to my wife about the spend $ now to save $ later with the metal lights. My wife is focused on the startup costs and not the future costs.

The things that confuse me:

the watts - following the guidelines, i need between 4 to 10 watts per gallon. this makes it 240w to 600w. Forgetting the style, how on earth can you get enough bulbs anywhere near the tank at 25w per to get the 600w you need? I am not figuring this out at all. I am aware that you cant figure in the blue lights into this equasion and I am clueless about the coral lights figuring in.

Heat from the lights - MH lights are hotter than the T5HO, right? I live in a fairly cold climate and during the winter, our house is kept a little cooler than most. We love blankets, and my daughter wants a suggie (NO). Would it be better from a heat standpoint to get the MH lights?

Built in fans - these are good thing right? Keeping the lights cool would be desirable so that they dont melt. But wont this kick up dust and crap and possibly get into the tank? I have a background in car stereo and am aware how heat sinks work and what makes one kind of heat sink better than another. We tried to avoid fans as it introduced alternator whine into the system, but there is no audio in a fishtank. If I were to make something on my own, does radio snack sell fans that would work?

Spectrum - I am aware that there are differnt lables for the different kinds of lights out there. I would imagine that full spectrum lighs would be the best, but whats the point of getting anything else? whats with the kelven scale? I have seen some lights at 10K and 12K and then some at 6k. I know that the TV your watching should be at 6500K inorder to ensure true color for what you are watching, but what bout these things? I would imagine the bigger the # the better the light.

So far, just about everyone has been helpful here and has offered me wonderful advice. This happens to be a very important part of a marine setup and I felt it deserved its own thread. Besides, this might help other newbs to understand the lighting aspect better. If you have made your own lighting setup from "scratch" can you please post a pic of it so I can get an idea of what I would have instore for me? Thank you all for reading this far and thank you for your time in answering even the most basic of questions that have been posted here.

OMG I would be confused as well.
I have a Coralife Master controller (there are several brands). It has two timers on it. The daylight kick on and all the night time ones kick off.

My schedule:

  • Moonlights are on all night.

  • 6:30am the actinic (blue lights) kick on and at 7:00am the Daytime MH lights come on the actinic and MH run together most of the day.

  • At 7:00 pm the MH kick off and only the actinic remain on. At 9:00pm the actinic kick off and the moonlights come on for the rest of the night.

I can arrange the timers my own way, this is how I did it. The master controller has color coded outlets.
3 Yellow outlets = daylight (MH lights plugged in)
2 blue outlets = actinic w/daylight together (Actinic plugged in)
2 Black outlets = night time (moonlights plugged in)
1 White outlet runs 100% of the time (a power head plugged in)

So all you need to do is get your lights and a master controller to time them to come on when you want. All the lights you will ever need are :
Daylights: these can be MH, LEDs, T5s, and PCs whatever you want to use. These are the grow lights
Actinic : These are the Blue lights, also help the corals to grow
Moonlights: These allow you to see your night time critters, and help stop night fin nipping or fish/predator night attacks

10K, 12K, 14K and even 20K are bulbs...each higher K is a little bluer in tint. The 10K creates a very yellow look to the tank, but this is a good K for the fastest coral growth.

Fans blowing across the surface of the tank keeps the heat from the lights down. I have two mounted on my canopy, they collect dust, but sticky dust that does not get into the tank. My MH lights come with a fan and two double actinic bulbs, a seperate plug for each light. all in a single casing with glass.

Hope this helps.

P.S.
My MH lamps are 2 X 175w for my 90g...your little cube wold be fine with 1 X 150w or a pendant that clips if you went with MH lighting.

You have several options, but you stated more against a DIY project. I would look more into the line of a good T5 setup. Giesseman or ATI. Something plug and play, quality and sleek stylish features.... My 2 choices.... Maybe Henry(Spanko) will chime in.

I would rather do a plug and pray thing as I am not a handy guy when it comes to making things. I can fix just about anything, but i cant create anything more complex than my kids. Even that wasnt a whole lot of work, LOL.

I would imagine a DIY thing would be mounting the holders and whatnot to a piece of wood and then supporting that wood over the tank in some fasion. Is it more complex than this?

well it seems like i cant get away from a DIY setup. So this is what I have picked out, comments?

Lighting - WavePoint 24" T5 HO 4-Lamp Aquarium Retrofit Kit Includes two 24 Watt Sun Wave (12K) Lamps and two 24 Watt Blue Wave (460nm Super Actinic) T5 HO Fluorescent Lamps. I sure hope these will work as i took a look at the installation picture/diagram and I think i can do this. Combine this with that marked down 30' canopy we found today and we should be complete. The things I dont like about this is that there isnt a seprate power source fro the blues from the whites, and there is no LED "Moon" lights. If this kit will work and there is a setup up that has what i am looking for, please post it for me.

the wavepoint t5 should hv 2 switches; each switch controlling 2 bulbs. if u dont mind the startup cost, u tank is the perfect size for led lighting.

that however is the problem, startup costs is what is making me get the retrofit kit. The missus doesnt want to spend money that we dont have on lotsa things. So this was my next best idea, retrofits, to get the quality of lighting that I need. I found these retro's for $150 online. How much more would the LEDs be?

I just placed the order for the wavepoint retrofit kit and it should arrive next week for me to finagle onto the canopy over the tank.

As far as LEDs go, If I had a place to tinker around, and If I had the $ to tinker with, I might make my own LEDs. But i dont have the space or the $ to tinker in this house. Maybe for a different tank in the future.

The bulbs here are okay to start with IMO but I think you will find that the yellow tint from the 12k bulbs may not be pleasing to the eye. There are plenty of LED actinic lights out there are a fairly low cost that could be put into the canopy to use for "night lights". Google Ecoxotic Stunner LED strips.

I'll check into them once I get the lights in and setup over the tank. These things seem cheap enough (5o for the lights and 20 for hte power supply) that If I need them, it wont break the bank to add them to the system.
