Lighting Placement ?

Is it OK if I just set my lights on top of my tank if I have the Egg Crate on there?
It's a 36" Coralife Lunar Aqualight 1x96w Daylight and 1x96w Actinic on 46 Gal Bowfront...
I just installed the Egg Crate and it seems brighter if I take the legs off, but want to make sure I won't melt the Egg Crate or cause other probs. I've had the light on the Coralife legs for about 6 months, keeping the light 3 or so inches from the surface.
Thanks

Yeah make sure you have some overhang....Personally I would get some glass strips cut and run from front to back under the lights just in case.....I've seen the exact same thing down and somehow, someway the light did manage to make it into the tank, and trust me all it'll take is just a splash and that Coralife unit is done.......

I do have the center brace, which is a couple inches across that is under the Egg Crate as well...
I've had it this way since I've posted and so far, so good... and the light is brighter and I can tell my Corals like the extra light better as well...
